Acadiana: The Big Easy Gluten Free

January 29th, 2008 by Brandi

Acadiana is a D.C. restaurant that deserves a glutie shout out. This New Orleans themed restaurant, by Chef Jeff Tunks and sister restaurants TenPenh, DC Coast and Ceiba, gets gluten free with style.

I recently went for dinner where I learned that a Category 5 was, in fact, a hurricane (oops!). With a follow up bourbon fizz, I was giggly at dinner … at best. The drink menu was comprehensive and yummy! After I was through with it, I’m surprised the waitress tolerated my questions, let alone answered them with accuracy and efficiency.

As I mentioned, we began our meal at the bar with a trio of deviled eggs. These bite sized bits of heaven featured crab, caviar and shrimp and were the perfect size to satiate our appetite while we waited for our 8 p.m. reservation. After the delightful snack, we moved to our table where the waitress expertly walked me through the menu and recommended several dishes that would meet my dietary restrictions. I settled on the beet salad and grilled filet sans blue cheese and sauce. My fiance enjoyed the famed shrimp and grits. I wanted a bite, so I checked again, and the grits were safe! What a nice surprise … on my plate and in my experience. I highly recommend the restaurant for anyone with a food restriction.

We’ll be back! I’m thinking about another bourbon fizz …

    Hang on, hang on:

You drink bourbon? Doesn’t bourbon have gluten in it????

Brandi does drink her share of bourbon (and my share, and your share…). All the bourbons I’ve looked into are GF, from your standards to the premiums. Let us know if you find something different.

Hey DCM7D - Thanks for the inquiry … actually, all **distilled** liquors are gluten free. While most are originally made from barley, rye or a wheat derivative, gluten is a protein that is removed during the distillation process. You need to be careful of any raw liquors (I wouldn’t touch moonshine if I were you, but for many reasons other than its GF qualities) and malted beverages are never okay (so JD coolers are out), but bourbon stays. Thank GOD. I heart bourbon and bourbon fizz.
